Common rug sizes & placement tips
Not sure what size you need?
You’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions we help with. Here are a few general guidelines to get you started.
Living room
- 8x10 or 9x12 rugs are the most popular
- Your rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of your furniture to sit on it
- For larger spaces, a rug that fits under the entire seating area creates a more finished look
Dining room
- Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides
- This allows chairs to slide in and out comfortably while staying on the rug
- Common sizes: 8x10 or larger, depending on your table size
Bedroom
- For a queen bed: an 8x10 rug works well
- For a king bed: a 9x12 rug is ideal
- Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, or use runners on each side for a softer landing
Hallways & entryways
- Runners are a great option for long, narrow spaces
- Leave a few inches of floor showing on each side for a balanced look
